A Sri Lankan wedding at South Farm

Arathi & Asher’s Wedding at South Farm

If you’re looking for a South Farm wedding photographer, this wedding is a great example of how much variety the venue offers in one day. With a traditional Sri Lankan ceremony in the Old Dairy followed by an outdoor civil ceremony at the Summer House, it made full use of South Farm’s different spaces while still feeling relaxed and well paced from start to finish.

One of the things that works so well about South Farm is how naturally the day can move between its farmhouse, gardens, barns, and outdoor ceremony spaces. That made it a brilliant setting for a wedding with two very different ceremonies, plenty of time outside, and lots of opportunities for portraits throughout the day. You can also see more from the venue on my South Farm wedding guide.

The Wedding Day

Groom prep in the farmhouse

Asher got ready in the farmhouse with his groomsmen, all dressed in traditional Sri Lankan outfits.

Bride prep in the Coach House Suite

Aarathi was getting ready downstairs in the Coach House Suite, and once she was dressed we headed upstairs for a few portraits in her Sri Lankan outfit. It was a lovely start to the day, with time for a few quieter moments before everything picked up.

First look in the garden

With a packed schedule ahead, Aarathi and Asher chose to have a first look in the garden before either ceremony began. It gave them a moment together before the busiest part of the day. We also made time for a few portraits with their dog, Zola, before she was taken home later that morning.

Sri Lankan wedding ceremony in the Old Dairy

The first ceremony took place in the Old Dairy and began with Asher’s procession, accompanied by traditional Sri Lankan drummers and dancers. It was an incredible start and set the tone straight away.

The bridal party entrance followed before the ceremony itself began inside. There were several traditional moments woven into the ceremony, including the sharing of milk and other symbolic rituals. It ended with Aarathi’s uncle splitting a coconut as the couple stepped down, which made a striking final moment to capture.

Drinks reception in the gardens

After the first ceremony, everyone moved into the gardens for drinks, hugs, and congratulations. South Farm is built for this kind of relaxed flow, with the farmhouse, barns, and gardens all sitting comfortably together, so guests can spread out without the day ever losing momentum.

Drinks reception in the gardens

After the first ceremony, everyone moved into the gardens for drinks, hugs, and congratulations. It was a relaxed part of the day and gave guests time to catch up before the next ceremony.

Group portraits at the blue door

For the first set of group photos, we used the area in front of the farmhouse blue door. It worked really well for family groups and gave this part of the gallery a recognisable South Farm feel.

Outfit change

Before the civil ceremony, Aarathi headed back to the Coach House Suite to change into her wedding dress, and we took a few more portraits upstairs once she was ready.

Civil ceremony at the Summer House

The second ceremony took place outside at the Summer House, with Asher now changed into a white dinner jacket. It had a completely different feel to the first ceremony, which made it a lovely contrast. Once the civil ceremony was over, they also included a handfasting.

Confetti

After the civil ceremony, guests lined up for confetti by the Farmhouse.

Candids in the gardens

From there, everyone relaxed back into the gardens for more drinks, hugs, and all the in-between moments that help tell the full story of the day.

Portraits on the driveway, by the pond, and in the gardens

We used this part of the day for more portraits, making the most of the driveway, the gardens, and the bridge over the pond. Because Aarathi and Asher had changed outfits, it was a good chance to create something different from the earlier portraits.

A few more groups in formal wear

We also fitted in a few more group shots in front of the blue door, this time in formal wear. That gave the gallery a nice balance between the two parts of the day.

Room details in the Tudor Barn

Before guests sat down, I photographed the room details in the Tudor Barn. The table plan stood out in particular, with caricatures of each guest worked into the display.

Entrance and cake cut in the Tudor Barn

The celebrations then moved into the Tudor Barn for the entrance and cutting of the cake.

Speeches

The speeches came from Aarathi’s dad, Asher’s dad, Aarathi’s brother, the best men, and Asher. With that many speakers, there was always something happening, from big laughs to quieter moments.

Portraits in the kitchen gardens

Later in the day, we headed into the kitchen gardens for another short portrait session. By then the light had softened, which gave these photos a calmer feel than the earlier portraits.

Night portraits on the driveway

Just before the evening party really got going, we went out for a few night portraits on the tree-lined driveway. This works so well at South Farm because the trunks along the drive are wrapped in LEDs, which makes it a brilliant spot for one last set of portraits before heading back in.

First dance and partying in the Horse Barn

The first dance and evening party took place in the Horse Barn. Aarathi and Asher’s first dance included a dip kiss, and it was not long before the dance floor really came to life. Before long, both of them were being lifted onto guests’ shoulders.

Champagne spray on the driveway

To wrap up coverage, we finished with a champagne spray shot on the driveway. It was a fun final image and a great way to end the day.

This was such a brilliant wedding to photograph, with so much packed into one day without it ever feeling rushed. Even with two ceremonies, outfit changes, and a full schedule, everything flowed really naturally, which says a lot about how well South Farm works as a wedding venue.
