Kathryn & Kieran’s Wedding at Tythe

Natural, story-led wedding photography at one of Oxfordshire’s most beautiful barn venues

Kathryn and Kieran’s wedding at Tythe Barn Launton was such a fun one to photograph. It was an October wedding with beautiful light, a lovely relaxed feel through the day, and loads of energy once the celebrations got going. They booked me after I photographed Kieran’s sister Jess’s wedding to Matt at Huntsmill Farm, which always makes it especially nice to be asked back by the same family.

One of the things that worked so well about this wedding was the balance of the day. The ceremony itself felt intimate and personal, but the celebration soon opened out into a much bigger, lively reception, with confetti straight after the vows, a brilliant drinks reception, funny speeches, and a packed dance floor later on.

Tythe Barn Wedding Photography

If you’re planning a wedding here and looking for a Tythe Barn Launton wedding photographer, it is a venue that gives you loads of variety in one place. Set at the heart of Tythe’s Manor Farm, Tythe Barn brings together the historic Thatched Barn, the Cowshed & Hovel, the Farmhouse, The Nook, and beautifully kept gardens and open fields. It feels rural and relaxed, but everything is laid out in a way that makes the day flow really naturally.

The Thatched Barn sits at the centre of the venue and is where indoor ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, and parties take place. It has Cotswold stone walls, oak beams wrapped in fairy lights, and those huge double-height barn doors, so it works especially well for both the big moments and the smaller in-between ones. The Cowshed & Hovel is ideal for drinks receptions and quieter pockets of the day, while The Nook gives you a bright, calm space for the wedding morning just steps from the barn. It is the sort of venue that works just as well for intimate weddings as it does for much bigger celebrations.

Kathryn and Kieran’s Wedding

Bride prep in The Nook

Kathryn got ready in The Nook, which is a brilliant space for the morning. The light, the calm feel of the room, and the fact that it is tucked away but still so close to the main barn all make it work really well for prep. I photographed the dress hanging up, the final stages of getting ready, and then the dress reveal to Kathryn’s dad, whose reaction was great.

Groom prep in the Farmhouse

Kieran got ready with his groomsmen in the Farmhouse, which gave the morning a very different feel from the bridal prep but worked just as well. The Farmhouse is perfect for that side of the day, with plenty of space and a more relaxed atmosphere before everyone headed over for the ceremony.

Ceremony in the Thatched Barn

The ceremony took place in the Thatched Barn, with Kathryn walking down the aisle with her dad. It was full of smiles from the start, with a couple of readings woven into the ceremony as well. One thing I was especially careful with here was the light. The front of the ceremony space is darker than the guest seating area, so I used off-camera flash to help balance the room and keep Kathryn and Kieran properly lit without losing the atmosphere of the barn.

Confetti on the gravel path

After the ceremony, everyone gathered outside along the gravel path for confetti. It was one of those perfect transitions from ceremony into celebration, with guests already in great spirits and the whole day opening up from there.

Drinks reception in The Cowshed and gardens

An impromptu receiving line began straight after the confetti, with Kathryn and Kieran hugging and welcoming their guests one by one before everyone settled into the drinks reception in The Cowshed and gardens. This part of the day had a really relaxed feel, and there were loads of lovely candid moments to photograph as people caught up and celebrated.

Group photos

For the group photos, I kept the smaller family groups by the barn doors to the Thatched Barn so they stayed quick and efficient. The larger groups needed a bit more room, so we moved those to the entrance of the barn. That worked well because it kept everything flowing without taking over the drinks reception.

Couple portraits in the autumn light

For the first set of portraits, we stayed close to the front of the house and made the most of the lovely October light. It gave the photos a soft, warm feel and suited the venue perfectly.

Portraits in the Thatched Barn

Before guests came through for dinner, I also took a couple of portraits of Kathryn and Kieran in the Thatched Barn set up for dining. It is always worth using that transition point in the day if the room looks great and there is a quiet minute to do it.

Entrance to the wedding breakfast

When it was time for dinner, guests waved their napkins in the air and cheered Kathryn and Kieran in. It made such a good entrance and immediately lifted the atmosphere in the room.

More portraits by the driveway and metal barns

Because it was an autumn wedding, the light was fading quite early, so we slipped out between courses for a few more outdoor portraits. This time we headed towards the driveway and stopped by the metal barns for a different look. On the way, we were greeted by a couple of friendly donkeys, which made for some really lovely, unexpected photos of Kathryn stroking one of them.

Speeches

The speeches came at the end of the meal and were great fun to photograph. They came from Kathryn’s dad, Kieran, Kathryn’s sister, and the best man, and there were brilliant reactions all around the room throughout.

Candids after the meal

After the meal, I spent some time capturing guests relaxing in the barn and the atmosphere shifting naturally into the evening.

Creative portraits in the Thatched Barn

Later on, we snuck Kathryn and Kieran back into the Thatched Barn for a few more creative portraits. I used off-camera flash for these and also grabbed a shiny metal drinks tray from the bar to create a reflection shot.

First dance and party

The first dance took place in the barn and then the dance floor filled up quickly. Once the party got going, it had a brilliant atmosphere and loads of energy.

Champagne spray

To finish coverage, we went outside for a champagne spray shot. First Kathryn and Kieran had a go, then Kieran and his groomsmen decided they wanted a turn too, which was a very fun way to end the night.

Kathryn and Kieran’s wedding at Tythe Barn Launton was such a fun one to photograph. It had that perfect mix of lovely autumn light, a relaxed atmosphere, loads of personality, and a really lively finish to the day. From prep in The Nook and the Farmhouse right through to the creative portraits and champagne spray at the end, it made full use of what makes Tythe Barn such a great venue.

FAQs

Yes. The Tythe works really well for wedding photography because it gives you a good mix of indoor and outdoor spaces all in one place. The Thatched Barn, Cowshed, Farmhouse, gardens, and open fields all give you different options through the day without needing to go far.

The Thatched Barn is a lovely ceremony space, with Cotswold stone walls, oak beams, fairy lights, and those big barn doors. It feels warm and full of character, but the light can be a little uneven towards the front, so I often use off-camera flash during the ceremony to help balance the room and keep the couple properly lit while still keeping the atmosphere of the space.

Yes. Tythe Barn gives you enough variety to do both, which is really useful on a wedding day. Outdoor portraits can make the most of the gardens, driveway, and fields, while the barn itself is brilliant for creative indoor portraits later on.

Yes. I keep group photos organised and efficient so they do not take over the drinks reception. The aim is always to get the photos you want without making that part of the day feel too formal.

Definitely. They do not need to take long. Often it is just a quick five-minute window in the right place at the right time, which is exactly what we did here later in the barn.
