Portrait of the bride and groom on the driveway at Notley Abbey wedding

Sally & Riccardo’s Wedding at Notley Abbey

A romantic Notley Abbey wedding with live music

Sally & Riccardo’s wedding day took place entirely at Notley Abbey, a luxury country house wedding venue on the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire border. Even with heavy rain throughout the day, it still felt warm, relaxed and full of atmosphere. From prep in the bridal suite, to a floral-filled ceremony in the Abbot’s Hall, a musical reception in the Monks’ Refectory, and portraits along the tree-lined driveway when the rain eased, their day showed just how well the venue works in all weather. If you’re planning your own wedding here, you can also read my Notley Abbey wedding guide for tips on timings, photo spots and how the day flows.

The Wedding Day

My coverage began with bridal prep in the Notley Abbey bridal suite, where Sally got ready alongside her two bridesmaids and did her own makeup. Riccardo was also getting ready at the venue, which allowed me to capture a little groom prep as well.

The ceremony took place in the Abbot’s Hall, which was beautifully decorated with large floral urns. Despite the weather outside, the ceremony space felt intimate and elegant, making it a lovely room to photograph.

The reception was held in the Monks’ Refectory and began with a song performed by two of Sally and Riccardo’s friends, which set a warm and personal tone for the celebrations. After the wedding breakfast, speeches were given by the best man, maid of honour, the father of the groom, and the father of the bride, with lots of great reactions around the room.

After the meal, the rain eased briefly, giving us the perfect opportunity to head outside for portraits. One of my favourite features of Notley Abbey is the long, tree-lined driveway, which works beautifully for relaxed couple portraits. We also took a few photos at the front of the house before heading back inside.

The evening reception began with a short speech from Riccardo, followed by Sally performing a song and the cutting of the cake. It was a brilliant, personal way to kick off the evening celebrations.

  • Discreet, candid photography with incredible attention to detail

Andy is a fabulous, professional photographer.

When we were choosing photographers, it was important to find someone who captured candid moments. We couldn’t care less about staged detail shots, although he did capture our shoes quickly and beautifully. We wanted someone discreet who could capture movement, my family loves to dance, and Andy delivered. His attention to detail is second to none, and he strikes the perfect balance between artistry and results.

He’s direct in his communication and guidance, which helped us avoid a lot of awkward couple shots. We felt comfortable with him during our complimentary engagement session, which was only four days before the wedding, and he sent us digital prints just two days later so we could display them at the wedding.

After the wedding, he took time to adjust and perfect the 1000+ shots. I believe he sent the link about 1.5 months after the wedding, and they’re perfect. We’re so glad he’s detail-oriented and took the time to curate everything, providing the photos in both colour and black and white. He truly captured our special day. There is literally nothing else we could have wanted. He’s superb.

Also, he loves a good puddle shot, and he’s definitely willing to “suffer” for his art. Thank you, Andy!
